According to the Nurtured Heart Approach, parents often spend too much time and energy correcting their children's inappropriate behaviors, and not enough time paying attention to when their children are behaving appropriately. This contributes to the child's feelings of frustration and low self esteem. Parents, throughout the day, should actively acknowlege when their children are behaving well. The praise should not be contrived or sound fake: it's best to just describe what the child is doing: i.e.: I like how you are sitting at the dinner table and eating your meal.
